It is larger than it needs to be in almost every dimension so that it can be filed to fit your plane exactly. This will allow you to remove almost all of the slop in the connection to the chipbreaker, as well as in the pin, and the connection to the adjuster nut. This will take less work to make fit exactly to your plane and will allow you to remove almost all the slop from the adjuster. The connection to the adjuster is a bit oversized so it can be filed to fit your adjuster. The split allows you to insert an included screw and widen the tip to fit even the largest chip breakers.
